Around the World in French!

Episode 4 : Luxembourg

Let’s continue our journey with our series Around the World in French! For this fourth episode we will be learning and exploring Luxembourg.

About Luxembourg

Luxembourg is one of the world’s smallest countries and is located in Western Europe. It is bordered by Belgium, Germany and France. Its capital city is Luxembourg, which happens to be one of the four capitals of the European Union. Did you know ? Luxembourg has three official languages : Luxembourgish, French & German. However, legally only Luxembourish is considered as the country’s national language.

French Language

According to a study of the Ministry of National Education back in 2018, 98% of the population was able to speak French. In Luxembourg French is the main communication language, it is used in trade, hotels, restaurants, cafes and more … followed by Luxembourgish, German, English and Portuguese. Generally French is the preferred language of the government, administration and justice. What’s interesting is that Luxembourgish itself uses many French words and expressions, as a matter of fact more than 5.000 words of the national language are of French origin.

Gastronomy

The cuisine in Luxembourg was heavily influenced by the cuisines of its neighbors France and Germany. Some of Luxembourg’s most popular dishes are : Gromperekichelcher (Crispy potato fritters); Bouchée à la Reine (Puff pastry with poultry); Letzebuerger Kniddelen (Luxembourgish dumplings); Flammkuchen (Tart with bacon & onion) or Quetschentaart (Plum tart).
