About Gabon
Gabon, also known officially as the Gabonese Republic is a country located on the west coast of the African continent. Its population is estimated at 2.3 million people and its capital city has been Libreville since 1960 when it became independent. Did you know ? French is Gabon’s official language, however Fang is also widely used as well as 40 other indigenous languages.
French Language
It has been estimated that 80% of people are speaking French in Gabon on the other hand the second most popular language Fang is estimated to be the mother tongue of 32% of the population. French is mostly used in Libreville and among those who have completed higher levels of education (secondary or university). French is also the language used at school.
Gastronomy
Because of its colonization period Gabonese cuisine was heavily influenced and offers a blend of traditional African ingredients and French flavors. Its links to France can also be seen in larger cities where many French specialties are available (croissants, baguette, …).
Some of Gabon’s most popular dishes include : Nyembwe chicken (Chicken Stew); Braised Fish; Brochette (Skewered Meat), Atanga (Spread made from a fruit); Beignets (Deep-fried pastry); Plantain fritters and more …
